Athens Area Homeless Shelter provides collaborative, comprehensive services to homeless individuals and families working toward sustainable independence.
The services at the Athens Area Homeless Shelter include long term shelter for homeless families with children through the Transitional Shelter Program. We also offer employment and education related supportive services for homeless individuals and families through the Job TREC Program.
Providing a Meal
Our biggest volunteer opportunity is providing dinner for our residents. We have a group of people provide a meal each day of the year.
We have resident meetings with our six moms on Monday evenings, and skills classes for them on Tuesday evenings. Volunteer babysitters come to spend time with the kids from 7-8 on Monday and Tuesday nights.
We want all our students to be successful with their educational goals! If you are interested in tutoring, we'd love to have you! We ask that tutors provide a minimum of 6 weeks of assistance so that our families aren't having to meet a new tutor every week. Tutoring can be scheduled on Mondays from 6-7, Tuesdays from 6-7, Wednesdays from 6-8, and Thursdays from 6-8.
Grounds-keeping and Gardening
Are you the outside lover? Have a green thumb or just love playing in the dirt? We have the perfect opportunity for you. We are looking for volunteers to help with our garden. Sign up to work in our gardens or sign your group up to come do an outdoor cleanup day!
Providing Skills Classes
We are looking for individuals who can teach our moms about: Health and Nutrition, Parenting, Education and Employment, and Budgeting and Finance. We would love for you to join us to share your wisdom. Our skills classes are held on Tuesday nights from 7-8, and can be taught as one class, or a series of classes. Click here to contact our Shelter Coordinator about teaching a class.
