Shell Bagging for National Seafood Month

Listed by Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant Volunteers

About

Celebrate National Seafood Month with us!

Make a difference during Seafood Month by joining staff from UGA’s Shellfish Research Lab to bag oyster shells. Volunteers will place shelled oysters into marine safe bags, and these bags will then be used in living shorelines that help stabilize eroding coastal banks.

These bagged shells create a new habitat for wild oysters and encourage the creation of new oyster reefs, which improve the wildlife habitat along the shoreline. In fact, an oyster reef can act as a food source, provide habitat for over 70 aquatic species and respond to rising sea levels by moving up with the water level.

After the bags are placed onto the living shoreline, new oysters, called “spat,” will settle on them as their new habitat. It takes about two to three years for an oyster reef to become fully established.

Registration is required.
